Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest automobile manufacturer by volumes, has showcased the Swift hybrid model at the 2020 Auto Expo. The car was first exhibited at the Indonesia International Motor Show in 2018. The company has already announced its plans to focus on electric mobility for the Auto Expo.
The new Swift hatchback is powered by a 48V mild-hybrid unit. It’s an advanced system than the 12V start/stop unit which hauls the Ertiga, Ciaz, and Baleno.
The 48V unit of the Swift hybrid is mated to a 1.2-litre, K12C petrol motor. The engine outputs 91PS maximum power and 118Nm peak torque. With the hybrid motor in action, the car produces 105PS maximum power and 148Nm peak torque. The Swift hybrid is fitted with a 5-speed automated manual transmission (AMT). The 48V hybrid unit was introduced internationally with the 1.4-litre Boosterjet petrol motor. Besides the 48V lithium-ion battery, the new Swift’s powertrain comprises a 48V-12V convertor and an integrated starter generator. The car, according to Maruti Suzuki, returns a fuel economy of 32kmpl in Japanese driving conditions.
The Swift compact hatchback debuted in 2003 and was available in India by 2004. The current-generation car is hauled by a 1.2-litre petrol motor which produces 83PS maximum power and 113Nm peak torque. The 1.3-liter diesel unit, on the other hand, outputs 75PS maximum power and 190Nm peak torque. Both motors are mated to a 5-speed manual gear system with a 5-speed AMT available as an option.
The Indo-Japanese carmaker has already announced that it will discontinue diesel motors in the BS-VI era. The new emission standards will be implemented in India from 1 April. Maruti Suzuki has not disclosed when the car will be commercially available in India.
